For general questions about working with us - please review the information below.

Sorry - we are not able to hire H-2B status workers.

  • Coming to Pelican, Alaska is an adventure! You will have the opportunity to work hard and make some good money, and meet some great people.

However, working in a fish processing facility is not always easy! There are oftentimes long, cold, uncomfortable days you are required to work. Tasks on a processing line can often feel tedious and monotonous. Although we do try to switch crew around to different jobs to help with this. Expect to be sore and tired but to continue working even when you wake up sore and tired. This job is hard on the body, arms, wrists, hands, etc. You need to be able to be on your feet for 10+ hours a day and able to lift 50+ pounds continuously. We expect people to come to work ready to learn, be able to pick up tasks quickly, and be able to be flexible with their job tasks for the day. We are a small company and small crew - so adaptability to new areas and tasks is required.

  • Ability to work long hours on your feet doing physical tasks.

Be in close proximity to fish - fresh and frozen.

Perform repetitive tasks for up to 16 hours a day

Live and work with the same people 7 days a week for the duration of the season.

Be able to problem solve and resolve conflicts with co-workers

You will live and work in a very remote town with NO CELL SERVICE.

You must be able to live in a remote village with NO MEDICAL SERVICE.

Be able to show up on time and reliably to work.

Work in a cold, wet environment.

Understand that there are no unexcused absences. Your team will rely on you to show up and help them get through the shift.

  • Yakobi Fisheries provides a bunkhouse for it’s seasonal staff. This facility is just across the boardwalk from the processing plant. You may be asked to share a room. It is close quarters. There is a shared community room with couches, a television, games, and books.

The kitchen is shared by all, but managed by the Crew Cook. You have the freedom to make your own meals when time allows - but please work respectfully with the Crew Cook, and your fellow crew members.

You are expected to clean up after yourself; your dishes, food, & your personal belongings. Respect goes both ways and you will be sharing this space for the season.

Bed linens and a pillow are provided.

  • We work at the mercy of the fish. The amount of hours you can work depends on how much fish is delivered. We cannot guarantee hours, so expect flexibility, especially at the beginning and end of the season. When we have fish - there is work - and overtime - 7 days a week. When we don’t have fish due to low runs or weather - there may be little to no work.

Our plant has one shift that starts no sooner than 5:00 AM (but usually closer to 6:30 AM) and ends when cleanup is complete. (On average around 7 PM). You will be expected to be available on an “on-call” basis during the entire season.

On slow days, work may be available to only some of the crew. This may be assisting in case-up, cleaning, or other tasks. If you prove to be someone who can show up when needed and adapt to new tasks, you may be asked to help out on slow days when the entire crew cannot be on the clock. That’s good for your paycheck!

  • We will offer a detailed list or recommended items to bring upon hiring. You will need to provide your own waterproof boots. We have some rain pants and jackets, but most crew choose to purchase their own. All safety gear is provided; gloves, ear plugs, and other PPE. Hairnets and beards are provided and required when in production areas.

  • There are two ways to get here, either on a small seaplane directly from Juneau, or on a ferry or tender boat. Yakobi Fisheries will pay for your travel from Juneau to Pelican only.

  • This is an isolated and very small community. Mail service is available, although can be very sporadic depending on weather. Mail and packages may be delayed for many days (even through Amazon).

The Lisianski Inlet Cafe offers breakfast and lunch during M-Sat.

The Pelican Library offers library services and free wifi.

Pelican General is our new grocery store. You can find beverages, frozen foods (including ice cream), snacks, staples, basic toiletries, and lots of other items there.

You may also opt to place an order with a grocery store in Juneau, and have it flown out on Alaska Seaplanes. This is at your expense, and we can help you out with logistics if needed.

  • Pelican is a small coastal fishing community located in Lisianski Inlet of Chichagof Island. We are in Southeast Alaska surrounded by the Tongass National Forest. Our year-round residency is about 60 people, which almost doubles during the summer. Our small community has a cafe, post office, and occasional dry goods in the bottle shop. Summertime and fishing season brings our small fleet fishermen in their troll, longline, and pot fishing boats. The municipality owns and leases a large ice machine that brings hundreds of boats into the inlet for top quality ice to keep their fish preserved. Yakobi Fisheries, as well as Hoonah Cold Storage purchase commercially caught salmon, black cod, halibut, lingcod, and rockfish. Fish buying tenders often anchor on the outer coastal areas as well. Pelican is also home to multiple charter fishing enterprises. With the commercial and sport sectors, in addition to a host of summer time residents, the boardwalk that serves as our primary thoroughfare is quite busy from late May to early September. You can walk from one end of town to the other and see our beautiful tidelands occupied by many bird species, harbor seals, land otters, sea otters, mink, martins, and the occasional bear! Stroll through the harbor and see the old wooden boats and meet the fisherman, or walk on the flats and feel the barnacles and muscle shells crunch under your feet as you search for seashells. We call Pelican home! And we would love to meet and work with you for the upcoming fishing season.
